Scotland Yard Adventure Centre (The Yard)

Awarded £4,977 for new play equipment for children and young people with disabilities.

Messy play

For Edinburgh’s families with a disabled child, access to quality social and leisure opportunities are few and far between, they frequently face barriers to participation such as inaccessible premises, a lack of staff training around disability inclusion, judgement from others and unaffordable entrance fees. The Yard’s services are invaluable in meeting these families’ needs, ensuring that Edinburgh’s disabled children have a safe, supportive place to play.

With a community grant, The Yard were able to purchase inclusive play equipment which has been used by 652 children and families through family play sessions, school sessions, youth clubs and early years activities. As a result, 81% of disabled children were more confident, 73% had more chances to take safe risks, and 89% of had more fun in their lives. One parent said they “love the experiences it gives myself and my child together, where there’s so many adventurous activities in one place”, while another said, “So glad to have The Yard in our life. It is a safe place for me and my children. I love watching my child so free and so safe to explore the area and at the same time, it gives me respite as a parent.”
