Environmental considerations in Procurement
We want to become a net zero Council by 2030. This means that we want to remove the same amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the air. We are also working with partners to tackle climate change across the city. While reducing our carbon emissions is crucial to the future of our city and the planet, we also need to recognise that a changing climate presents new risks to how we live and do business both now and in the coming years. We need to futureproof our contracts as well as foster resilience for our city to thrive. We support Council's aspiration of becoming a net zero, adapted and nature positive city, please see our Sustainable Procurement Strategy 2025-2030 for more details.
As a supplier, who is interested in working with the Council, you would need to consider the impact your organisation has on the environment and society.
Through understanding your own organisation’s operations, you should understand where your main environmental impacts occur. If you haven't started on this journey yet you might want to look into resource mapping. , a free CPD Certified online training course from Business Energy Scotland, is a good starting point.
The next step would be to understand your greenhouse gas emission. If your organisation has not previously assessed or reported emissions, you might want to start by using (allows calculation of your emissions using meter readings or utility bills), The free-to-use calculators or any other resources available.
To help your organisation to prepare for changing climate please see the . It provides practical actions that businesses can take to protect their people, products and services, premises, processes and place.
These steps will get you ready to supply information about your organisation’s environmental strategies or actions that you are taking, for submitting your bid whenever a relevant contract comes up. It will also enable you to manage climate-related risks and opportunities and link in with the following support:
- Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce - The delivered by Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce aims to support Edinburgh’s SMEs participate in the just transition to a net zero carbon economy and support innovative decarbonisation projects in the city.
